James Trafford believes going out on loan has been really important for his development and progress away from Manchester City and believes the main focus for Bolton Wanderers must be being judged in May as they aim for League One promotion.

Trafford has recently just turned 20 and is spending the season out on loan at Wanderers for the season. It follows a second half successful spell atthe Whiteslast campaign, which had followed a spell at fellow League One club Accrington Stanley.

TheCityyoungster is highly thought of at the Etihad Stadium and has the aim of eventually challenging Ederson for the number one jersey at Pep Guardiolas side. He has recently put pen to paper on a new deal which will keep him at the Premier League champions until the summer of 2023.

Trafford is at the start of his career and believes he is getting better with every game he plays. He believes his time out on loan has been key to his development.

He said: Ive only played professionally for one-and-a-half years and half of that time Id only played 11 games. At the current moment, maybe, but then if youd asked me the same question four weeks ago Id have said that was my best form too.

I feel like I am getting better with every game and that people can see it.I am playing better now than two, three, four weeks ago.

I feel for a goalie, going out on loan is really important. Id gone to Accy at 18 turned 19 and then played a full season. It is a big change from academy football but I am a quick learner and I feel like every game I get better. Thats why I feel I am better than I was last month, six weeks, six months ago.

Stats mean nothing, I have been in the game a year-and-a-half. Everyone has apps on their phone and can see the stats but I dont read too much into them. Football is a game of the eye. When they are in your favour its great but when they are not you cant really get down about it. They are nothing I give too much of my time to, really.

With Wanderers, Ian Evatts side sit seventh in League One and just outside the play-off places on goal difference, being level on points with Derby County and Portsmouth. The clubs performance levels has been up and down in recent weeks, but the Whites still find themselves in the hunt for promotion.

Trafford insists Wanderers are focusing on themselves rather than outside views of how they are performing. But he believes the end of the season in early May is when a true judgement can be given.

He said: In the two games we won (Accrington and Burton), we knew we didnt play particularly well. The main thing was getting three points.

There is a process and you have to take care of a performance, then points come. You cant get bottled up in your mind about what people are saying too much.

You look back and reflect after every game but the main thing is May. We can talk over and over each week but you cant really tell the full picture. You need 46 games once it has all finished.
