Manchester City surprised by Premier League charges over alleged financial rule breaches that could see them expelled from division
Manchester City have insisted they are surprised after the Premier League charged with breaking financial rules, which could potentially see them demoted.
The reigning champions have been charged by the Premier League with numerous breaches of rules that span from the 2009/10 season to the 2017/18 campaign.
In response, the club have released a statement and insisted they welcome the review from an independent commission.
A statement read: Manchester City FC is surprised by the issuing of these alleged breaches of the Premier League Rules, particularly given the extensive engagement and vast amount of detailed materials that the EPL has been provided with.
The Club welcomes the review of this matter by an independent Commission, to impartially consider the comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence that exists in support of its position.
As such we look forward to this matter being put to rest once and for all.
An investigation was opened by the Premier League four years ago and concluded that City have breached the organisations financial rules more than 100 times over a nine-year period from 2009 to 2018.
Among the rules alleged to have been broken include not giving in good faith accurate financial information that gives a true and fair view of the clubs financial position.

That includes providing financial information to the Premier League related to revenue (including sponsorship revenue), its related parties and its operating costs.
Part of the second set of rule breaches concerns former City manager Roberto Mancini, who was in charge between the dates December 2009 and May 2013, which has been flagged.
The Premier League has chargedCitywith breaching rules concerning requiring a member club to include full details of manager remuneration in its relevant contracts with its manager between the aforementioned period.
If City are found guilty, they will not be able to appeal to the Court for the Arbitration of Sport, as they did in 2020 when they managed to overturn a European ban for two years.
If found guilty, the Etihad outfit could potentially be given a points deduction or even expulsion from the Premier League, as well as compensation paid to other clubs.
